Meet the 2018 Judges!

Dave Barber, Annandale, VA

Dave is a long term member of the American Wine Society (AWS) and is a graduate and Certified Wine Judge from the AWS Wine Judge Training Program, within which he also instructs, mentors students, and administers the final examination. The AWS has also recognized Dave as its 'Outstanding Member' in 2011. Dave is on the Board of the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association where he has chaired their annual Wine Competition (averaging over 500 entries annually) for over ten years. Dave has presented innumerable wine seminars on various topics and has judged in many wine competitions, as well as having written many articles that have been published in various wine magazines. He currently works with various Virginia wineries in their tasting rooms and also at various festivals.

Dave also enjoys travelling and has visited numerous wine areas on three continents and has been inducted into several wine brotherhoods in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Serbia, Switzerland, and Hungary as well as being a Master Knight within the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine of America where he also serves as the Provost General of the Northeastern United States.

JoAnn DeGaglia, Garnerville, NY

JoAnn is a certified Specialist of Wine from the Society of Wine Educators as well as a Certified Sommelier earning an American and Italian Wine Specialist Degree from the North American Sommelier Assn. She is an Educator and Associate Instructor for the Westchester Wine School in New York and earned her Wine Judge Certification from the American Wine Society. She works part time at two of the Hudson Valleys great wine destinations. Brotherhood America's Oldest Winery and the Wine Spectators award winning Glenmere Mansion in Chester, New York.

Michael Fritze, Waterford, VA

Mike Fritze is a recent graduate of the AWS wine judge certification program. He has been an avid amateur winemaker for 8 year. He is the owner of Quartz Creek Vineyards, a new operation just getting started in Waterford, VA. He is also a member of the Virginia Vineyards Association and the Loudoun Winegrowers association. He is an active member of the American Wine Society and has served on the Board of the German Wine Society in DC. He has traveled extensively visiting wine regions in the US, France, Italy and Germany. He has wine judging experience at the American Wine Society Annual Meeting, the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition, and the New Jersey State Fair Competition.

Carol Hackett, Frankfort, KY

With a background in healthcare, Carole's undergraduate degree in Biology and Chemistry has been valuable in her wine studies. Her interest in wine has led her to seek further education. Carole is a Certified Wine Judge with the American Wine Society. Carole has completed Level 2 of the WSET program with Merit. She is a member of the Society of Wine Educators and enrolled in the Certified Specialist in Wine program.

She enjoys judging amateur and commercial competitions. Her five years of judging experience has taken her through Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri and Texas. Carole enjoys judging county fairs, regional festival events, state fairs, amateur competitions and international competitions. Currently, Carole presides as Chapter Chair of the AWS chapter in Frankfort, KY.

Sharyn Kervyn, Marlton, NJ

Sharyn Kervyn has been involved in the restaurant and wine industry for over 30 year, opening and operating several restaurants, including The Getty Center in Los Angeles as their catering director in 1997. She won "Best of" Wine Spectator awards for her Wine Lists throughout her career. Since 2010 Sharyn as judged professional and amateur competitions throughout the country, and is the National Tasting Project member of the Dionysian Wine Society, a Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) with The Society of Wine Educators and is in the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) Graduate Diploma Program (level 4). Sharyn is also a Certified Judge for The American Wine Society and a Sommelier through the Guild of Sommeliers.

Annemarie Morse, Richford, NY

Annemarie Morse, Master's Degree in Oenology, Adjunct Lecturer, AWS certified Wine Wine Judge, Wine & Food educator, consultant and writer, Assistant Winemaker
Annemarie has a Master's Degree in Oenology from Cornell University. She teaches Wine courses to students, faculty, staff and the publci on wine education, wine judging, wine making, business meal etiquette, beverage studies and wine & food pairing. She is an American Wine Society (AWS) certified wine judge and has taught wine classes, including judging at the American Wine Society National Conferences. She has passed the Court of Master Sommeliers, Introductory Level Sommelier exam and is preparing for the certified qualifying exam. She is a published freelance wine & food writer.

She founded the Finger Lakes chapter, of the AWS and serves as the chairperson, presenter and coordinator for over 5 years. Annemarie has judges wines in; Texas International (Table Captain, TC), Finger Lakes International, Atlantic Seaboard (TC), Great American Amateur Wine Competition, Great Lakes & Eastern States, Winemaker Magazine, Big E Northeast Gold, Hudson Valley Wine & Spirits and New York State Fair Wine Competitions. She presented at the Viticulture & Annual Wine Industry Workshop. She has worked through harvest and blending as an assistant winemaker at Damiani Wine Cellars. Annemarie hosted a wine tour and cruise of Italy. Her company, Wine By Annemarie, LLC provides consulting services to restaurants and classes for staff, private events and the community,

Jane S Murray, Carolina Beach, NC

Jane S Murray hails from a lifelong journey in agriculture, working as a Research Assistant at Cornell University's Long Island Research and Extension Center, growing and studying several clones and varietals for New York applicants. Jane complemented her vineyard work with operations management in Long Island and Finger Lakes tasting rooms, in distribution as Key Account manager for Southern Wine & Spirits' Wine On-Premise division, Beverage Director at Cornell's Statler Hotel, and currently as a District Manager On-Premise for Tryon Distributing in North Carolina.

Ron Natalie, Catawba, NC

Ron is a retired software company executive and wine lover. He's an American Wine Society certified wine judge. He also holds an Advanced Certificate from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (with distinction) and recognized as a Connoisseur of Wine by Robert Parker and Kevin Zraly. He is a member of the International Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine and life member of the American Wine Society. He is a founding co-chair of the Catawba (NC) chapter of the AWS. He has produced two vintages of wine at the Vint Hill Winery. He resides in North Carolina with his equally wine-crazy wife, Margy.

Kevin Ostrowski, Beaver, PA

Kevin, a former high school chemistry, physics, and math teacher, is a retired QA/QC utility executive and current Chapter Chair of the American Wine Society's (AWS) Beaver County, PA chapter. An AWS certified wine certified wine judge, Kevin holds a Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) level 2 award in Wine and Spirits (with distinction) and is enrolled in WSET level 3. He has judged for the American Wine Society, WineMaker magazine, Hudson Valley wine competition and several local and regional wine competitions. Kevin also attended the Penn State Wine Quality initiative seminar. In Spring 2018 he will conduct wine classes for Butler County Community College in Butler, PA. He is a home wine maker and has won several medals from both AWS and WineMaker magazine. Kevin is also a member of the Society of Wine Educators, Wine Scholar Guild, and the Pennsylvania Wine Society. Kevin resides in Beaver, PA.

Michael Quinlan, Northampton, MA

Michael's career at Table & Vine began in 1996 when he was hired as a part-time wine associate. Over the course of the past decade, Michael was quickly promoted to full-time sales floor captain, sales manager, wine sales manager and as of January 2008 became the corporate wine sales manager.

Michael is responsible for Table & Vine's wine selection, purchasing and merchandising. He oversees the Table & Vine inventory within the Greenfield, Northampton and Wilbraham Big Y World Class Markets. Michael also works closely with marketing to ensure Table & Vine's image is always creative and unique and that people understand that Table & Vine is a lifestyle destination.

Michael has traveled to many vineyards around the world including Chile, Argentina, Italy, Austria and Canada's Ontario region. He has also traveled extensively in France and Spain having visited every major wine region. Michael believes it is this kind of knowledge and experience that makes Table & Vine stand out above the rest. He also attends countless trade events, wine fairs and wine tastings. Because of his tireless pursuit of knowledge and excellence, Michael personally tastes over 5,000 each year. His ability to identify up-and-coming wine regions, excellent wine values and his exceptional knowledge of the wine industry as a whole has made Table & Vine a unique destination for wine connoisseurs' nation-wide.

Michael always shares his travel experiences with the staff at Table & Vine and loves to pop open a bottle of his newest discoveries and older favorites in order to educate the staff. Michael can honestly boast that the staff at Table & Vine is second to none.

Michael serves as the Chief judge of the Eastern States Exposition Northeast Gold Wine Competition.

Michael's favorite types of wine include Spanish, Red Burgundy and both German and Austrian wines.

Walt Rachele, Lovettsville, VA

Walt Rachele had an early love of wine and is actively engaged with wine in several capacities. He is a founding member (1988) of the Nation's Capital Chapter of Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine, an international wine organization with chapters in the United States. A long standing member of the American Wine Society (1984), he graduated from the Wine Judge Certification Program (1994) and remains active as an instructor. Walt served on the AWS Board of Directors as Treasurer. Currently, a board member of the AWS Educational Foundation as treasurer his wine knowledge grows from communication with the graduate students being awarded scholarships.

Elected to the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association, Board of Directors, Walt now has an excuse to visit more wineries, and is active with the Vintage Virginia Wine Festival. He has participated as a judge in many competitions such as MS, NJ and PA Governor's Cup, Winemaker Amateir Competition, AWS Amateur and Commercial Competitions, Wine of the South, the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition and several local events. He has traveled extensively to increase his wine knowledge visiting Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, France, England, Hungary, Germany, Macedonia and Serbia. He currently resides in Loudoun County Virginia.
