Space Chat with the International Space Station (ISS)

Join New England students at The Big E Arena as they make live radio contact with an astronaut on the International Space Station (ISS), as it orbits 260 miles above the Earth, traveling at 17,500 miles per hour!

1:20pm — Pre-Contact Program begins

The Pre-contact program will begin with inspirational videos about space, NASA, ARISS, going to Mars, and more. Speakers will explain the STEM learning activities that the students are involved in, the role that the space agencies around the world play in making astronaut contact experiences happen, and how Amateur Radio will be used to make the contact possible.

2:30pm — Space Station Contact begins

Our Astronaut will be Bob Hines, KI5RQT. The ARRL ground station for this contact will be ON4ISS in Belgium. 13 students from New England Sci-Tech, Natick, Mass. STEM program will ask the questions of the astronaut as the ISS orbits 260 miles above the earth traveling at 17,500 mph.

  • The Space Chat is part of a program to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) educational activities, and Amateur Radio learning activities for young people.
  • The public will be invited to witness the Space Chat from the Arena.
  • This is a rain or shine event UNLESS there is thunder and lightning in the vicinity. If this occurs, the event will be conducted in the Ham Radio Operators booth inside Door 6 of Better Living Center
