A family family favorite and even the site of several marriage proposals, the Giant Slide made its debut at The Big E in 1969. It has been a permanent structure and signature attraction on the fairgrounds since 1972. Only 30 slides were built and there is a sister slide in permanent residence at the Minnesota State Fair.
The parts were all made by separate companies, including a grooved aluminum exterior manufactured by Boeing Aircraft. The slide is designed with four waves to prevent riders from picking up too much speed and the grooves keep people on a straight path to prevent collisions. It's painted yellow because the color attracts the least amount of heat.
