FUN FAIR FOODS AT 2009 BIG E
Everybody loves food, and at The Big E everyone finds new foods to love. So throw your diet out the window for the once-a-year, 17-day feast of Fair favorites and intriguing new foods. No one will walk away hungry from the 2009 Big E.
Returning Fair Favorites
The Big E's signature dessert, The Big E Cream Puff, is big enough to share, but you'll want to keep all the sugary satisfaction to yourself. Also served at The Cream Puff Bakery, The Big Eclair and The Big E Chocolate Chip Cookies, made with Ghirardelli chocolate chips. All three of these taste-tempting treats are made on location at The Cream Puff Bakery in the New England Center.
New Foods to Love
Lordy's Elephant Ears have joined The Big E's menu of edible delights. The dough is yeast-raised which results in a texture more like a glazed donut, similar to pastry, rather than bread dough. And if that's not enough to tantalize your taste buds, you can choose from a variety of toppings including butter and cinnamon, powdered sugar, spicy apple and cinnamon, chocolate, cherry with powdered sugar and Bavarian cream.
Mix a little "south-of-the-border" flare with a bit of Lone Star State style and you get Chimichangas. This authentic Tex-Mex treat, made with a combination of rice, beans and beef wrapped in a flour tortilla, is sure to bring you back for more.
Don't like vegetables? This new fairtime kid-in-the-kitchen from Dr. Vegetable may change your mind. Experience Fried Green Beans and never say no to your veggies again. Encased in a flaky crust, this irresistible green sprout is sure to become another must-have morsel.
The Waffle Hut will be on hand to dole out generous helpings of exquisite and delicious variations on the basic breakfast dish. They have transformed ordinary breakfast fare into a canvas from which to design edible artistry. Offerings such as the Vermont Waffle, which consists of vanilla ice cream and pure maple syrup, and the aptly named Breakfast Bomb, with strawberries, bananas, and copious amounts of syrup, tantalize the taste buds.
Amy's Sweet Treats will serve a mouth-watering treat, frozen custard.
Down Home Rice Pudding offers a new take on an old favorite. Pudding parfait, cones, sundaes and custards are served in waffle cones and bowls. And you can't say no to "Worms in Dirt." This cleverly-named treat gives you gummy worms mixed in a creamy blend of pudding and cookie crumbs. Your kids and the kid-in-you will love it! Also on the menu is Diabetic Delight Rice Pudding, no sugar or salt added and it's still delightfully sweet. The best part? Everything is made all-natural with no preservatives.
Snack on a tasty Pretzel Bite with a selection of dipping sauces while you sip a frozen Margarita or Mojito from Xena's Pub.
The "Call of the Wild" will touch the adventurous side of your taste buds. Yankee Boy will offer Elk, Chipotle Buffalo and Salmon Burgers, as well as Venison Sausage.
The Big E Martini Bar in the Italian Pavilion will feature a Sushi Bar. Stop by and try some sushi with a signature martini made with V-One Vodka.
Deep Fried Delights
Think deep fried and think delicious. Deep fried Fair offerings include pickles, macaroni and cheese, baloney sandwiches, gorgonzola fries, seafood, cheese curds, vegetables such as green beans and zucchini and an "awesome onion."
Want deep fried on a stick? Fairgoers can have deep fried cheese, cheesecake or a classic corn dog, all on a stick.
Local Fare
The White Hut has been located right down the road from The Big E on Memorial Avenue since 1937. This prototypical burger shack has been serving up the same, iconic cuisine since its inception. Simple and delicious burgers garnished, or not, with delectable fried onions. E.B.'s, a mainstay of the area, offers its famous breaded chicken fingers and wings.
International Fare
Spice up your dining by choosing from fare with an international flair. Cuban sandwiches, yellow rice, fried pork, arepas and plantains provide fairgoers with a taste of Latin cuisine. The Chinese menu boasts lo mein, egg rolls and stir fry. Indian dishes consist of chicken tandoori, shrimp vindaloo, channa masala and naan. Have a taste of the "Old Country" with strombolis, pastas, and thin crust pizzas. Greek food is sure to make the mouth water with gyros, salads, and baklava.
